The following organizations and community groups come from both national and local levels. Like the PEIBCIP, they provide resources for all those affected by breast cancer. Please contact us if you know of a similar organization whose resources we can share.

Canadian Cancer Society, PEI

  • Reach to Recovery A one-to-one support program for women who have had breast cancer. This service offers hospital visitations and telephone support for the patient.
  • Living With Cancer Support Group People living with cancer, their families and friends meet regularly to help support one another. Meetings take place in various communities.
  • Books and Videos about diagnosis and treatment.
  • Financial Assistance medications and nutrition supplements, transportation and accommodations (Financial assistance is based on income).
  • MedicAlert Bracelets for cancer patients. Free membership for one year for breast cancer and lymphedema patients.

Prince Edward Island Breast Cancer Support Groups
The PEI Breast Cancer Support Groups are survivor-driven groups dedicated to providing support to those affected by breast cancer.

The PEI Breast Cancer Support Groups provide:
  • Group support
  • A voice of solidarity for Island breast cancer survivors
  • Education
  • Advocacy
There are regular monthly meetings.

Cancer Information Service
A national service of the Canadian Cancer Society. Call with any questions related to cancer, (e.g. medications, treatments, side effects, clinical trials, complementary therapies and more. Calls are confidential.

CancerConnection
A free, bilingual confidential telephone or on-line peer support program where people living with cancer or caregivers are matched with trained Cancer Society volunteers who have had a similar cancer experience.

Look Good, Feel Better
Teaches women living with cancer how to use cosmetic techniques and hair alternatives to help manage the appearance-related side effects of cancer and its treatment.

Canadian Breast Cancer Network (CBCN)
The national voice of breast cancer survivors, CBCN represents breast cancer support groups and advocacy and affiliated groups across Canada. National focus groups on the special concerns of rural women and young women with breast cancer have helped the Partnership find ways to reach out to these groups in PEI. CBCN also offers periodic webcasts on different topics of interest to women living with breast cancer and their families. Intimacy After Breast Cancer - a free day long interactive workshop for women who have experienced BC.  This program/book was developed by Dr. Sally Kydd,Fredericton,NB.  Dr. Kydd describes her personal journey after BC, discovering the need for supports/information.  On PEI, volunteer Judy Donovan Whitty, B.A., M.Ed., Certified Canadian Counsellor & member of the Canadian Counselling Psychotherapist Association facilitates the workshop on behalf of CBCN. Wigs for Women
Canadian Cancer Society, PEI Division will provide a wig for women experiencing hair loss due to cancer treatment.


Wraps of Love
Island-made, knitted 28"x80" wraps are available at New Method Drycleaners next to the Great Canadian Bagel on University Avenue in Charlottetown or the Canadian Cancer Society-PEI Division, Rochford St., Charlottetown, PE.

YWCA Encore After Breast Cancer Exercise Program
A free 8 week program, offered three times a year, combining gentle floor and pool exercises with the support of other women. It’s safe, fun and therapeutic. Encore can help you strengthen and tone your arms, shoulders and chest, regain mobility and improve the lymphatic system and your general fitness. Guest speakers present information on a range of complementary therapies and programs.

Lymphedema
If you’re experiencing trouble with lymphedema, ask your physician to refer you to the trained therapist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
